Chobani founder to deliver Sage Colleges commencement address

The founder and president of Chobani, the Greek yogurt producer that has seen exponential growth in recent years, will deliver the Sage Colleges' commencement address at 10 a.m., May 18 inside the Houston Field House in Troy.

Hamdi Ulukaya was born and raised in Turkey in a dairy farming and manufacturing family, according to his public biography,  He began his own business venture in 2002 when he launched Euphrates, a wholesale producer of feta cheese, in Johnston, NY.

The company found quick success, allowing Ulukaya to purchase an abandoned dairy manufacturing facility near Utica in 2005. There, he spent nearly two years creating the ideal recipe for a Greek yogurt line. In 2007, he launched Chobani, Inc. and the yogurt brand began showing up on supermarket shelves soon after.

In the intervening time, Chobani has experienced explosive growth and expects to gross $1 billion in yogurt sales this year. The company, of which Ulukaya is the sole owner, controls 36 percent of the 5$5.6 billion U.S. yogurt market.
